SYDNEY TURNED IN the passenger seat, wanting to see Coop’s expression. “I’ve finally gotten her to sit on the sofa.”
His rusty eyebrows shot up. “How did you manage that?”
“We were curled up watching a movie one night, and since then she sits on it.”
“Only when you’re around,” Saber said.
“Ah. I didn’t know that.”
“You’ve got an unfair advantage, Syd, you can offer her an incentive—you. No wonder you won.”
“Technically I didn’t win, as she,” Sydney gave Saber’s arm a poke, “still sits on the floor when I’m not there.” She raised an inquisitive eyebrow. “I thought you said it was comfortable?”
“It is.” Saber lowered her voice secretively. “But I miss you when you’re gone. I don’t notice it so much on the floor.”
“Aw, Saber, you big softy,” Coop teased, smirking when Saber glared at him through the rear-view mirror.
“You are so sweet.” Sydney’s smile was tender as she reached out and gave Saber’s thigh a squeeze.
“My reputation’s in ruins,” Saber muttered.
Coop sniggered. “Wait till the guys hear about this.”
“Don’t you dare!” Saber said. “I’ll never hear the end of it.”
Sydney giggled. She’d missed the banter between these two. It’s not like Coop hadn’t been around, but from upstairs she hadn’t seen a lot of it. She remembered what Saber had said in the kitchen that morning— about not wanting him to feel pushed out. She decided to address the issue. “Coop, you do know that you can come round at any time? You don’t need an invitation.”
“You girls deserve your privacy.”
Sydney appreciated that, but she didn’t want him to be left out either, especially as Saber was so close to the man. “Just because Sabe and I are now an item, that doesn’t mean things have to change between you and her. I respect that you two do a lot together, and I don’t want that to change on account of me.”
“It will change, Syd, because now they’ll be three of us.” Saber smiled. “The three musketeers.”
“In Sydney’s case, I think it should be mouseketeer.”
“I’m not that small,” Sydney said.
“If you’re sure I won’t be in the way?” Coop asked.
“You’re family to Sabe, that means you are to me too. And family can’t be in the way.” Coop sounded touched. “All right, but only on the understanding that you’ll tell me if you want some space. I won’t take offence.”
Saber chuckled. “We’ll tell you to get out, don’t you worry about that.”
“Okay then, it’s settled.”
A happy smile crossed Saber’s face. She took hold of Sydney’s hand and brought it to her lips. “You are the most wonderful person I’ve ever met.”
The comment caught Sydney unawares, and her breathing hitched, her eyes filling with tears. She was rendered speechless, so she simply squeezed the hand that held her own.
As Saber’s gaze returned to the road, Coop pointedly cleared his throat. “Most wonderful woman I’ve ever met,” she said.
Sydney laughed as she regained her composure.
Coop nodded his head in acceptance. “That’s better.”
